Declutter, renovate and make money!

Have you ever come to a point in your life when you find it difficult to declutter, move on and rid yourself of things you don’t really need any longer! Then read on. It could make you some money!

We recently repainted and refurbished a couple of rooms in the house because our teenage boys wanted to move into bigger bedrooms. We had to paint, move furniture and rearrange wardrobes and their contents.

 The lightbulb moment

It was the contents of the wardrobes that gave us an idea. Why not renovate and make money selling things on Gumtree or Ebay that we no longer needed? Then the idea spread to cleaning cupboards in the whole house. It’s amazing once you get motivated and start clearing out and realise there are many things that can be sold off for cash.

To make more room we began to look at furniture we no longer needed. Also old kid’s toys, guitars and clothes. Although it takes a bit of effort to organise photos and list the items online it is well worth the effort. So far we have sold a fish tank and accessories (lights, heat mat etc) for housing a lizard $150. Old school text books $180, and school jumpers and shirts $60. We still have plenty more items  and in total they will definitely pay for the paint, sand paper and any other items we need for rejuvenation of the rooms. Also we’ll have more room in the cupboards and less “unwanted junk” that we no longer needed.

Work time

The harder part came when we actually had to do the work and give the rooms the “makeover” as they say in the recent reality TV shows. Why does it always seem like harder work than on these shows? Once we finished painting, cleaning and replacing the furniture in the rooms we had two very happy boys.

It also gave us a great sense of achievement!
